Fenn Reaches Finals in 32nd Annual Basketball Tourney
The week in sports at Fenn School.
The following announcement comes from Brenda Dupont on behalf of Fenn School athletics.
Four independent schools competed for the court crown this weekend in the 32nd Annual Fenn School Varsity Basketball Tournament.
In the opening round, Fenn took a 22-18 lead at the half over Fay, then pulled away in the second half. Austin Dorsey dominated with 25 points, while Jack Lyne and Austin Hoey each contributed 11 points to a 62-53 Fenn win.
In the other opening-round game, Fessenden easily handled Buckingham Browne and Nichols and then had no trouble with Fenn en route to a 73-31 victory for the title. Dorsey, Lyne, and Hoey each contributed seven points, but it was Fessenden taking home its first championship in four years.
During the afternoon skills competition, Fenn's Gavin Tasker won the free-throw contest by making 10 of 15 shots in the first round and nine of 10 in the final.
In varsity hockey, Fenn made it look easy in a 6-1 victory on Wednesday against Fay. Fenn took a 1-0 first-period lead on a Will Roberston goal, his first of three on the day. Defenseman Brendan Seifert, Gavin Kennedy and Jake Goorno also scored in the 6-1 victory, Fenn's fourth straight.
"Our depth was the difference. Our first line handled the scoring and our other two lines played well in our own zone," said Fenn coach Derek Boonisar. "In particular, our forward line of Gates Dupont, Garren LaPlante and Gordon Hargraves played well defensively."
Defensemen Cory Tibbets and Sam Hesler played shutdown defense in front of goalie Leo Saraceno, who improved his record to 13-3.
