Golf Redux

Rotary Club of Concord hosts a rescheduled golf tournament.

Remember in August when Hurricane Irene was coming to town and we all battened down the hatches and cancelled our picnics and hunkered down to ride out the storm? And then remember how she got tired on the way and wasn’t really a hurricane after all, just some rain and wind? Well, it was still enough to make the Rotary Club of Concord postpone their fundraising golf tournament, and now they’re ready to hold it for real.

The Thomas R. Huckins Memorial Golf Tournament is now set to happen next Monday, Oct. 24, at the Concord Country Club, and they still need participants. This is the 23rd year they’ve held this event, which is a fundraiser for the Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund. In 2011 the Rotary Club was able to award $18,000 to CCHS grads; they’d like to be able to top that number this year, all the more important given the economy.

This event is a fitting tribute to Huckins, a longtime Concord resident and Rotarian who himself played an important role in giving back to his community, through such projects as the Emerson Hospital Helicopter Pad, the Rideout Playground Field House, the Veterans War Memorial, and the renovation of Monument Square.

The tournament begins with registration — and coffee, of course — at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 11:30. Your entry fee of $250 gets you the round of golf (at a premier course, natch), a box lunch, use of the putting green, a golf cart, tournament gifts and refreshments. But the fun doesn’t stop there: you also get a reception and dinner at the clubhouse that evening. And don’t worry if you can’t find three friends to join you: the Rotarians will find friends for you.

But what if playing golf isn’t your thing? You can still help out by sponsoring a tee or green for $250. Just send a check payable to Concord Rotary Charitable Endowment Fund to Rotary Club of Concord, Tee/Green Sponsorship, PO Box 455, Concord, MA. They also take Visa or Mastercard.

Hurricane season is over, so take the opportunity to get a last golf game in before the winter gets here in earnest.
