While there's always a lot going on at Barefoot Books on Thoreau Street, tomorrow night's event is extra special.
On Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m., Barefoot Books is hosting a Holiday Adventure Night in support of the Sally Test Pediatric Center in Eldoret, Kenya.
For kids up to 12 years old and their parents, the event will feature "children's entertainers, guest speakers, visits with Santa, storytelling, pottery painting, a terrific array of raffle prizes, and wonderful African crafts at the Barefoot Books Studio," according to Carolyn Wilkins of Barefoot Books.
The highlight of the evening will be a visit from a global Santa, sharing stories from around the world.
In addition to the live entertainment, Concordian Aileen Gardner, who works closely with the Sally Test Pediatric Center in The Moi Teaching and Referral hospital in Kenya, will talk about how fundraisers such as this one benefit children world away. An educator, Gardner has been sharing books from Barefoot Books with the children of Kenya for years.
"A significant portion of the evening's proceeds will be donated to support the Center's efforts to help nurture, empower and educate area families in Eldoret, Kenya dealing with medical emergencies," Wilkins said.
It is free to attend the event, and prices for pottery painting will be deeply discounted.
For folks who may want to contribute to the Sally Test Pediatric Center — or may just want to pick up some great gifts for the youngsters in their family — but cannot attend tomorrow's event, contributions can be made online. This Friday through Christmas, any shoppers who stop by Barefoot Books can request a portion of the proceeds from their individual sale go to the Sally Test Center as well.
