Is Flu Season That Bad, Or Is It Just Hype?

Flu season is upon us, and strong, officials say.

This week, the Red Cross called cases of the flu "widespread," while Boston officials on Wednesday declared the flu outbreak a public health emergency.

Is this just another flu season — akin to past winters when H1N1 or norovirus flared up? Or is it more than just a bunch of hype?

Some towns in the area are reporting that they're out of flu vaccine. Have you gotten a flu shot this year? Or do you not see the point?

Tell us what you think — is the flu getting too much hype? Or does the headline-hogging flu deserve the attention?

Last time I had the flu, I was down for two weeks...in bed, with a fever, unable to do anything down. I got secondary infections, which required antibiotics for another 10 days. My husband caught it from me, and within 2 days, developed pneumonia. Six WEEKS later, he was well again. And, we were young and healthy at the time. Folks, GET YOUR FLU SHOTS! At a minimum, all that time in bed is boring.

I have been a nurse for over 40 years. I cannot remember a more virulent flu in this region.
I cared for a family yesterday whose previously well 4 year old had died of the flu the day before.
I have a 60 year old friend who never gets the flu shot because he "is healthy and never gets the flu." He was admitted for several days with a severe pneumonia and such a concerning headache he had several, very expensive, consults and scans that all revealed his problems are the result of the flu. He has been out of work for three weeks, lost 15 pounds, is still dizzy when he showers and it will likely be several more weeks before he has the strength and resilience to return to work full time.
There are three strains of the flu this year's vaccine will protect you against. One of the strains in this year's vaccine is exactly the virulent strain that is causing so much morbidity. If you haven't had the vaccine GET IT ASAP. If you have had it - great.., but it is still important to use good judgement.., Avoid sick people and crowds, keep your hands clean with hand sanitizer and handwashing, stay hydrated and well rested. Get vaccinated, use good judgement, stay well!
