New Shop to 'Hatch' in Milldam

Gatehouse in West Concord moving to Walden Street, changing name.

With a fresh attitude and new lines of merchandise, the Gatehouse in West Concord is moving to Walden Street in the former Anderson Photo. The new store will be renamed "Hatch."

Owner Stephanie Shepard said she bought the Gatehouse six years ago and filled it with Scandanavian designed clothing and home accessories. She and co-owner Jane Grady are eager to bring the modern design shop to the Milldam.

The Gatehouse has been at the Commonwealth Avenue location for 15 years. It started as a holiday shop by then-owner Jean Forbes Getchell.

"I have a real fondness for West Concord and its businesses," said Shepard, "but I felt the new space is a better fit."

Anderson Photo, a longtime family business, closed some months ago.

Shepard and Grady carry modern home decor and clothing, most notably from Scandinavia. They carry Marimekko and other lines for adults and children as well as pillows, bags, jewelry and gifts.

Shepard likes the wide glass front showcase on Walden Street where she will be able to have more items on display. The square footage is about the same at both shops, but Hatch will have alcoves for carrying various design lines.

There is a sale going on now at the Gatehouse. Hatch will continue the gray and green theme in the new store in the Milldam.

Shepard and Grady meet with the Historical Commission this week about signage, and hope to be up and running by early August. They are selling all the furniture in the store as well as the home accents and clothes.
