Philanthropy: The Path to Peace and Justice [VIDEO]
Rev. Dr. James Forbes speaks at the Al Filipov Peace and Justice Forum.
The Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Senior Emeritus Minister of Riverside Church in New York City, received the first Al Filipov Peace and Justice Award last night at the Al Filipov Peace and Justice Forum at the Trinitarian Congregational Church. Forbes was presented with the honor by Filipov's widow Loretta.
Forbes was the keynote speaker at last night's tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001. The Al Filipov Peace and Justice Forum is an annual event held in honor of Filipov, a Concordian who was killed aboard American Airlines Flight 11. The Forum focuses on obtaining peace through communication and an understanding of one's fellow man.
In his presentation titled "Philanthropy: The Path to Peace and Justice," Forbes cautioned against adopting an attitude that diminishes other cultures, and called on people to "recover the values of the human community."
Forbes told the capacity crowd that whether great or small, everyone can — and should — contribute to the greater good of society, and that it is the strengths of one's character that others should focus on above all else.
"Every creature that walks the face of the earth has something to give," Forbes said.
