Oh, for the good old days when we were "nickel and dimed" by the airlines. Spirit Airlines has just announced that fees for carry on bags will reach as high as $100, effective November 6. You'll have to pay this amount if you attempt to board at the gate without a prepaid baggage fee. If you plan ahead, the fee can be as low as $25, which is in line with fees other airlines charge for checked bags.
These ancilliary revenues have been an important source of revenue for the airlines. While I understand the concept of paying for what you consume, charging for a bag you carry on yourself seems pretty unreasonable. After all, most of us need a change of clothes and a toothbrush when we travel.
I hope this new policy doesn't lead to folks deciding to wear multiple outfits on the plane in order to avoid the fee. The seats are small enough as it is!
