DESCRIPTION:Sociologist and organic farmer Dr. Stephen Cleghorn will spea
k at First Parish on Friday\, February 1\, from 7 to 9 p.m. about hydrau
lic fracking. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;Cleghorn runs a certified organic farm and g
oat dairy in Jefferson County\, Pennsylvania that sits above the huge Ma
rcellus Shale formation targeted for drilling for natural gas.&nbsp\; Be
cause his farm might be directly affected by fracking\, and because he n
ow perceives fracking as a serious threat to the global environment\, he
has become a well-informed critic of the natural gas industry. &nbsp\;D
 r. Cleghorn &ldquo\;has become the first landowner in the United States
to use a conservation easement to recognize and protect the rights of wa
ter\, forest\, and wild ecosystems. The easement then bans activities\,
like shale gas hydro-fracking\, which would violate those rights\, and e
levates the rights of nature above the power claimed by extractive energ
y corporations to despoil the environment.&rdquo\;&nbsp\; Come hear abou
t fracking\, how it affects the surrounding area and communities and all
living beings\, and the arguments for and against it.&nbsp\; A discussi
on and reception will follow the talk.&nbsp\; This event is hosted by th
e Environmental Leadership Team at First Parish and cosponsored by Conco
 rdCAN!
