Chelmsford Newborn is Youngest Member of Extended Emerson Hospital Family

When Elizabeth (Mara) Carpenter of Chelmsford was preparing for the birth of her second child, she didn’t hesitate in selecting Emerson Hospital to care for her and her new daughter.

After all, medical care at Emerson Hospital is a family affair, with 16 members of the Mara family born there.

Elizabeth’s late grandparents, Charles and Mary Mara, were both born in Concord and remained there all their lives, with Mary working as a real estate professional and Charles also well known in town as a firefighter and singer at St. Bernard’s Parish (now Holy Family Parish) in Concord center.

All three of the couple’s sons – Charles Jr., Richard and Kevin (Elizabeth’s father) – were born at the White House on the campus of Emerson Hospital. Although Richard moved out of state, the other two brothers had five children between them at Emerson. In turn, a combined eight children of these first cousins were born at Emerson.

The newest family member, Emma Julieta, was born to Elizabeth and Patrick Carpenter on Nov. 21, delivered by Avra Jordano-Alter, MD of Concord OB/GYN at 7 pounds, 14 ounces and 21½ inches. She joins big sister Norah, who was delivered by Vlassis Travias, MD of Concord OB/GYN on March 27, 2012.

Elizabeth said she enjoyed another positive experience at Emerson’s Clough Birthing Center, which strengthened her already firm connection to the place and people who have cared for so many members of her family, for so many generations.

“It’s tradition in our family to have babies born at Emerson,” she said.
