Curriculum Nights & Theme Study at A Place To Grow Concord

"Theme Study of the Forest" has been the highlight of early learning these past months at A Place to Grow childcare in Concord.  The Strawberry Hill Road day care center recently hosted its annual curriculum nights for families to visit and learn about their child's experience studying the forest.

Now in its 16th year, "Theme Study" is the focus of the school's early childhood education program in all of its Metro West locations in Arlington, Belmont and Concord.  In preparation for curriculum nights, the teachers worked with the children to prepare a portfolio of work for parents to see.

"Theme Study, "says Suzanne Foley, founder of A Place To Grow childcare, "is an integral part of our preschool and pre-kindergarten curriculum.  This is a long-term project that provides each child the opportunity to learn in depth about a particular area of study.  Parents and teachers participate fully. “

During the Forest Theme Study, the children are encouraged to learn in many different ways and in their own unique way.  Through art, literature, math and science, they gain knowledge and acquire specific skills.

“We believe,” adds Foley, “that children have an innate desire to learn.  And we know the importance of language and literacy in preparation for grade school and for life-long learning.  Our Forest Study creates a community where teachers and all the children at A Place To Grow --  infants, toddlers, preschoolers and pre-kindergarten – are working and learning together.
