In both the media and in medicine, there has been an increasing awareness of the danger that can result from recreation-related head injuries, including concussions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that each year, hospital emergency departments treat an estimated 173,000 sports- and recreation-related head injuries (including concussions) among children and adolescents. During the last decade, the number of emergency visits for these injuries has increased by approximately 60 percent.
