Emerson Hospital Sponsors Free CarFit Program on Oct. 26

Older drivers are often the safest drivers, in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur, due to their greater fragility. A proper “fit” in one's car can greatly increase the driver's safety.

Emerson Hospital’s Center for Sports Rehabilitation and Specialty Services and the Boston School of Occupational Therapy at Tufts University are co-sponsoring a free CarFit program on Saturday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m. to noon, at 57 ORNAC in Concord. The event is geared toward older adults, but open to all drivers, since those with back or neck pain, shoulder or wrist injuries, and cardiovascular concerns can also benefit from CarFit.

At a CarFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure their vehicle properly fits them for maximum comfort and safety. A 12-point checklist takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

The CarFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers and increase their mobility in the community. Participants have a chance to discuss findings with an occupational therapist.
