Local Woman Wins Emmy for Sandy Documentary

The 2014 New York Emmy Awards has recognized Erica Pitzi, the daughter of Jan Pitzi and Stephen Grande III of Sudbury, Mass., with an Emmy in the News Special category for her story, "Sandy: From Heartbreak to Hope," which she reported and produced for WPIX-TV, New York's CW affiliate.

The New York chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the win on March 30. Beginning in late October 2012, Erica spent months reporting from New York's Staten Island, one of the areas hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy. There she profiled families devastated by the storm's flooding, which claimed many lives and rendered homeless thousands of the island's lifelong residents. The New York State Broadcasters Association later honored the coverage with its Excellence in Broadcasting Award for Outstanding Documentary.

Since 2008, Erica, now a reporter for Al Jazeera America in New York, has received a Regional Edward R. Murrow award and four Associated Press awards. She graduated from Middlesex School and Brown University.
