OBITUARY- Catherine T. "Kay" Byron

Catherine T. "Kay" (Sheehan) Byron, 92, of Concord died Sunday March 30, 2014 in Littleton.

Born in Cambridge on February 14, 1922 she was the daughter of the late John J. and Julia A. (O'Leary) Sheehan. She attended Weston Public Schools and graduated from Weston High School in 1939.

She married John Holmes Byron of Concord in 1949 at St Julia’ Church in Weston. Concord became her home for the next 65 years. Mr. Byron died in 1986.

She was employed by the Concord-Carlisle School Department for 20 years and later for 11 years at the Concord Recreation Department.

She was an active parishioner at the former St. Bernard's Church, now the Holy Family Parish in Concord and served in a variety of capacities over the years including as an Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council member, and as a member of the Circle of Friends. She was also a member of the former Catholic Daughters of America, Our Lady's Court #1116.

In her retirement Kay enjoyed quilting and the great friends she made as a member of the Concord Piece Makers and the New England Quilting Guild. Several of her quilts were exhibited in the Concord Antiquarian, now the Concord Museum. Kay was the mother of Catherine B. Melville of Raynham, Elizabeth B. Laffan, wife of Noel of Raleigh, NC, John H. Byron Jr., husband of Martha of Chelmsford, Suzanne B. Manley, wife of Thomas of West Townsend, Thomas P. Byron, husband of Lois of Southbury, CT and Mark J. Byron, husband of Patricia of Townsend. She was the grandmother of J. H. Stewart Melville III, Sara Schaefer, Henry H. Legg III, Amy Byron, John H. "Chip" Byron III, Caitlin A. Manley, James A. Byron, Laura K. Byron, Mark L. Byron and Kelsey L. Byron. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Kenney and Dorothy Lillis, brothers John Sheehan, Joseph Sheehan, Philip Sheehan and son-in-law Henry Legg. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.


In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Holy Family Parish, Family Assistance Fund, 55 Church Street, Concord, MA 01742.

Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Thursday April 3rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Funeral will be held Friday April 4th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, CONCORD CENTER at 10 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 11 am.

Interment will follow the funeral Mass in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
