It’s Nov. 1, which means it’s All Saints Day – I’m not exactly sure how one celebrates that, but I do know how to celebrate the night before. And how did everyone else spend their All Hallow’s Eve? Were the ghosts and goblins able to get around the downed tree branches and sodden leaves in your neighborhood? I’m guessing it was at least easier than last year, what with the snow on the ground and all. But the really important question is, did you get rid of all the candy you bought, or do you have leftovers for yourself? If you’re anything like me, you probably ate enough to get you through to the next holiday.

Speaking of holidays, I hate to say it but we’re heading into that gift-buying time of year, which means you may want to know about the 43rd annual Concord Antiques Sale, happening this weekend over at the Trinitarian Congregational Church. This one-of-a-kind event is run entirely by volunteers, and benefits the church’s Mission and Outreach Programs. They’ll have cool old stuff from country furniture and accessories to Victorian patterned furnishings, as well as all manner of glass, jewelry, fine china, antique maps and prints, decorative accessories – basically, any old thing you can think of.

What I love is that it’s not just about the recycling of goods – which is fun enough to begin with – but they also have food. The church runs a country kitchen with soups, sandwiches and baked goods, so you can have your lunch while you shop. Or, pick up jars of homemade jelly, candied nuts, fudge, etc., and bring them home to eat yourself, or put them aside to give as holiday gifts. Either way, worth the trip.

The sale runs Friday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $8, and all proceeds go to benefit their very worthy Mission and Outreach Programs. For additional info, head over to here.

Yet another shopping op

It does seem to be the season for churches to open their doors and sell their wares, because First Parish Church on Lexington Road is hosting a Holiday Artisans’ Fair on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sounds like this fair is all things new: handmade glass items, children’s toys, scarves, jewelry – all cool stuff you should be buying for the people on your holiday list, but will probably want to buy for yourself. I generally end up with a few things for me when I go to these events.

They will also have food, if you didn’t get enough over at the Antiques Sale, and admission is just $3 – but then, it’s not a fundraiser. Go check it out and support the artists who work so hard to bring you beautiful things.

And one more  sale

Some of us just aren’t ready to do our holiday shopping, but instead just need to stock up on regular supplies – like sporting goods. If that’s the case with you, you’ll be happy to know that Fenn School over at 516 Monument St. is taking care of you, by having their annual sports sale this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. If you have kids who insist on growing annually, you’ll want to check out the vast array of sued sports equipment, from skis and boots to roller blades and bike helmets. Almost anything your little heart decides. For the best selection, get there early; for true bargains, if you’re not looking for something specific, go toward the end. Either way, you’ll be happy you went.
