Concord Water Dept. and ConcordCAN Launch Campaign to Promote Concord Tap Water at Picnic in the Park

Local, sustainable Concord water will be on tap and free at the July 4th “Picnic in the Park”—just one way that Concord is implementing Article 39, passed by Town Meeting, which urges us to refrain from using single-serving bottled drinking water.

Look for two mobile “hydration stations” near the flagpole at Emerson field with the message: “Refill——Renew!” Supplied by the Town’s Water Division, each unit has 6 drinking fountain and 2 refill fountains for reusable bottles. Volunteers from Concord Climate Action Network (ConcordCAN) will manage the stations and will have reusable bottles for sale at the ConcordCAN table.

Also at the ConcordCAN table will be a petition in support of legislation to extend the 5-cent container deposit to most non-carbonated beverages like water, sports drinks, flavored teas, juices, and other on-the-go drinks. The bottle deposit is a highly effective recycling program, but it currently applies to only one-third of the beverage containers sold. Please stop by to sign the petition, and join Concord’s Board of Selectmen, among others, in urging the legislature to pass the expanded bottle bill this session.

Finally, ConcordCAN welcomes your help in collecting all the single-serve plastic water bottles that will accumulate during the festivities on July 4. They will be made into a sculpture to illustrate the 1,500 water bottles per second that are thrown away in the United States.
