Runway for Recovery: 6th Annual Benefit for Breast Cancer Patients, Families

After losing her mother, Cande, to breast cancer several years ago, Olivia Achtmeyer wanted to find an aspect of the battle against the disease where she could make a difference while honoring her mom.

Inspired by a small, informal fashion event at the Concord boutique Maggie Taylor, which featured models who were breast cancer survivors, Olivia envisioned a large-scale runway show “where you could celebrate the success of survivors or the courage of family members who carry on the legacy of those they have lost,” she said.

“I wanted them to hear applause.”

The sixth annual Runway for Recovery show will he held on Thursday, October 25, at the Westin Hotel in Waltham. Some 40 models, 25 of them Concord women and many of them cancer survivors, will walk the runway wearing clothing from participating businesses including Concord shops Lyn Evans Potpourri Designs, Sara Campbell Ltd., French Lessons, Blue Dry Goods, Fritz & Gigi, and Sole.

Trunk shows will be offered by Concord Hand Designs and Concord Button Downs, with 10 percent of their proceeds going to Runway for Recovery.

Olivia’s goal is to sell 300 tickets and raise $65,000, which will benefit the Patient and Caregiver Fund at Massachusetts General Hospital. The fund, overseen by Dr. Jack Erban, who had cared for Olivia’s mother, covers the costs of programs that enhance patients’ understanding and comfort with the disease, such as the purchase of wigs and the provision of hotel stays for family members. It also supports professional development for healthcare professionals and counseling for children.

A dozen Middlesex School senior girls traditionally serve as volunteers at the event, helping with the silent auction, selling tickets, and assisting the models backstage. Olivia, who is the marketing director at the Fenn School, says the night promises to be inspiring and upbeat as the models are applauded while walking the runway to Top 40 hits.
