Ahoy, Mateys! The Theater Season Beckons

The dog days of August aren’t anywhere near over, but some people have already started thinking about fall. I know, right??

The thing is, if you want to be a part of fall theater, you have to be thinking about it now, which is why I’m here to tell you about the Concord Players.

First off, for all you thespians out there, it’s time to prep for auditions for their first show of the season, Mister Roberts. This comedy-drama won a Tony in 1948, and takes place aboard a ship during World War II. It has a great ensemble cast, with roles for nineteen men and one woman – yes you read that right. So guys, get out and audition; we need you!

Here’s the skinny: You need to prepare a short (2- to 3-minute) monologue that shows your best stuff – it’s OK if it isn’t memorized, you just need to have spent some time with it. They need men from early 20s to late 50s; the women from mid-20s to late 30s. Auditions are being held over at , at 7:30 p.m. on Aug 28 and 29. You don’t need an appointment, it’s first come, first served. Callbacks, if necessary, will be Aug. 30, also at 7:30 p.m.

The director, Doug Cooper, is planning to rehearse on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and occasionally on Fridays. There will be seven performances on the weekends between Nov. 2 and 17. For full details on auditioning and the show itself, go here.

Speaking of Theater

This is the perfect time to sign up for your theater subscription at Concord Players. Their theme this season is the lead up to WWII with The Sound of Music, the war itself with Mr. Roberts, and 1940s swing with Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

A subscription is ridiculously affordable: $55 for all three shows, and you know where your seats are ahead of time. To buy them separately, you’d pay $25 for The Sound of Music and $20 for each of the other two, so the subscription is really a bargain. Plus, now you’ll have plans for at least three nights!

Although of course you can pick any night for your subscription, I personally love the opening nights, because they come with a gala: hors d’oeuvres, desserts and drinks before the show, making it a whole event worthy of a city night out.
