2. Founders Day Celebration

Why Go: The National Park Service is turning 96, and the Founders Day Celebration features special events at Minute Man National Historical Park, including “Hats Off! For Homespun Heroes” at Jacob Whittemore House at 2 and 3 p.m., "Explore Family Live" at Jacob Whittemore House from12:30 to 4:30 p.m.; “Muster with the Militia” at Hartwell Tavern, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and “Pieces of the Past” at The Wayside from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

3. Muster Day in Concord
Where/When:'s North Bridge Visitor Center, 174 Liberty St., Concord; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25
Why Go: Also part of the Founders Day Celebration, the Muster Day features a militia drilling and musket firing demonstration, a manners and deportment class for children, a Middlesex County Fashion review, music and a chance for folks to muster with the militia, using wooden muskets.

Why Go: A volunteer-run fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Hannah Randolph Memorial Fund, the Thomas Chamberas 6K XC Race is a challenging and fun cross country race in the true New England style. Now in its 10th year, the race is open to any and all runners that are ready for a fun romp around the fields of Great Brook Farm State Park. 5. Love Letters: The Intimate Correspondence of John and Abigail Adams
Where/When: 's North Bridge Visitor Center/Buttrick Gardens, 174 Liberty St., Concord; 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 26
Why Go: Adams scholars and veteran living history performers Patricia Bridgman and Thomas Macy present "Love Letters," which begins with John and Abigail's courtship and continues through some of our nation's most tumultuous times.
