Seth Connelly and Friends to play at Main Streets Market and Café Thursday

Concert begins at 8 p.m.

Seth Connelly is inspired by the "great melodies and rhythms that make people want to tap their feet or their fingers on the table." He will be at Main Streets Market and Cafe on Thursday evening.

Since the age of 18, Connelly, an Acton native, has been playing music. In an interview with Patch Tuesday, Connelly said his music could be best described as a blend of his favorite styles: "70s', Rock/Folk, R&B, Motown, Jazz and originals."

Connelly took the time to answer some other questions Tuesday about his inspirations and love of music.

Q.  Do you write your own songs?

A.  I do write my own songs and like to mix them into live performances.

Q. What is the challenge of being a musician?

A. I would say the biggest challenge for being a musician is the shrinking number of venues that will support live music. ASCAP, BMI and Sesac are going after venues to have them pay royalties for live music for which they are really not paying the writers or creators of the music their fair share. But they are leaning quite heavily on new venues wanting to try live music and shutting them down if they don't cooperate.

Q. What do you hope audiences take from the concert Thursday?

A. Ultimately, I want them to hear their favorite song, or fall in love with one they've not heard before. If I can keep them longer than they'd planned to stay, and had them singing along with me, then I've really done my job.

Q. What other musicians inspire your music? How many shows do you do?

A. I'm sure this is an odd collection of people to tip my hat to, but James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, Marvin Gaye, these are people who have showed me sides of music that fascinate me. I play out usually once a week, but sometimes more.

Q. How did you get interested in music?

A. My dad played the ukulele in the service and when I saw him play it I asked him to show me what he was doing. Then I came to guitar, and eventually other instruments as well. I don't remember the first music that caught me, but I played everything my parents had and any neighbor that had a record or an instrument, I sorta became obsessed. I just love to have an instrument in my hands most of the time!
