Sharing the Road, and Sharing the Stage

Concord Youth Theatre introduces a new program for younger kids; plus a short reminder on road etiquette.

I’ve had a couple of requests from faithful readers to address the car/bike situation here in town, and since our roads and this fine weather do seem to invite both types of vehicles, I thought I would just take a minute to address the issue.

The bottom line is: Both drivers and bikers are entitled to use the roads, but neither is allowed to impede traffic. The best I can do is urge respect on both sides, because in an altercation, someone will get hurt, and it probably won’t be the one inside the huge hunk of metal.

Also, as the parent of a newly licensed driver, I would remind bicyclists that not every driver out there is totally confident about passing them, and may not have the experience to do it as well as they would like. Actually, it’s probably a good reminder to everyone – me included – that before we get all impatient and huffy with a driver who seems hesitant, to maybe consider they are new to this driving thing, and still working on getting experience behind the wheel.

OK, enough of that. Let’s get to some fun stuff.

You may know that Concord Youth Theatre (CYT) provides local kids with a pretty fabulous opportunity to learn stagecraft and hone their budding acting skills. But their Mainstage Performance Company is really just for kids 10 and up, and apparently there are a number of kids even younger who are itching to tread the boards, as they say. So CYT is introducing a brand new program for kids in grades 2, 3 and 4: CYT Jr. Performance Company. It starts Sept. 14, and will have rehearsals on Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. over at , and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. at the , 1375 Main St.

All this rehearsing will yield the full-fledged production of How to Eat Like a Child on Dec. 7, 8 and 9. They’re limiting this program to 30 students, so if you have a kid who fits the profile, contact CYT soon at 978-371-1482 or concord_youth_theatre@concordyouththeatre.org. You can also get more information by attending their parents’ meeting on Sept. 14 at 5:30 pm.

CYT will also have auditions for their Mainstage Performance Company production of Once on This Island next week, Sept. 5 and 6, from 3:45 to 6 p.m. For all the details on audition requirements, tuition, rehearsal schedule, etc., go here.
