Concord Restaurant Honored by Boston Magazine

80 Thoreau in Concord named Best of Boston New Restaurant, West.

The past 16 months have been quite the ride for Sudbury's Ian Calhoun.

In that time, he opened in Concord, a fine dining restaurant at the Depot, and this week was honored by Boston Magazine as the mag's Best New Restaurant, West.

"I'm definitely humbled," Calhoun said. "It's been very exciting. It's exceeded my expectations."

Calhoun said in the time the restaurant has been open, since April 2011, he's received strong support from local diners, and has enjoyed building a regular crowd.

"We do get some people from Boston, but it's about those who come once a week who help make us a success," he said. "We try to give you the experience you expect in Boston."

On the Boston Magazine website, the article about 80 Thoreau reads:

"City dwellers happily hop the Fitchburg line to the Concord Depot train station and head directly upstairs to the impeccable 80 Thoreau, where chef Carolyn Johnson (formerly of Rialto) cooks up some of the most consistently well-executed farm-to-table fare around, from a creamy parsnip-and-nettle soup with green garlic to seared skate with asparagus and walnuts. The management team’s résumés include stints at New York’s Craft, Per Se, and Rainbow Room, ensuring service is as impeccable as the cuisine."

Calhoun said the recognition from Boston Magazine was a great compliment.

After earning his Cuisine Diploma from Le Cordon Bleu, Calhoun managed New York City’s famed Rainbow Room. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School.

Appetizers at 80 Thoreau are in the $8-$13 range, with main courses in the $18-$29 range. There is also a bar menu that encompasses everything from “bar snacks” for $3 to “bar entrees” that will be in the $15 range.

"We talked all the time about being considered amongst Boston's best," he said. "It’s a real compliment."
