OBITUARY: Captain Stephen J. Masse, U.S.C.G. (Ret.)

Capt. Stephen Jay Masse, USCG, (Ret.) of Concord, MA. died Thursday October 24, 2013 at home, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Disease, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was the beloved husband of Susan (Smith) Masse.

Born in Flushing, NY, he graduated from the USCG Academy in 1959, where he was Commodore of the Academy Yacht Club. After serving a Coast Guard tour on the Ice Breaker Westwind in the North Atlantic, he attended RPI earning a graduate degree in Civil Engineering in 1962 and MBA at Pace University in 1970. He went on to serve tours in Honolulu, Bangkok, Governor’s Island, NY, Portsmouth, VA, Washington, DC and a final tour as Head of MSO Boston, MA.

After retirement from the Coast Guard in 1985, he worked at Clean Harbors until 1993. He was also a partner in South Hill Christmas Tree Farm in upstate New York.

An avid sailor, Steve was a member of the Storm Trysail, Sea Cliff and Menantic Yacht Clubs. He sailed many offshore races including: Annapolis-Newport Race, Newport-Bermuda Race, Fastnet Race and Block Island Race Week as well as small boat sailing on Shelter Island, New York.
In addition to his wife survivors include his children Linda and Richard and his sister Emily.

Steve enjoyed many years skiing, with his family and friends, in Vermont and Colorado, as well as visiting friends around the world.

He volunteered with Voice of the Faithful at Holy Family Parish, where he was a weekly communicant, the Concord Orchestra’s Pops program among others.

Service:
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish at St Bernard’s Church, 12 Monument Square, Concord, MA at 10:00 AM on Tuesday October 29, 2013.
