CC Fencers have a busy weekend

It was a busy weekend for the Concord Carlisle Fencing Team with a quad meet Saturday and the 8th annual Concord Carlisle Invitational on Sunday.

This was the first meet since the holiday break. The Men’s Team went into the break with a 1-2 record after beating Boston University Academy (16-11), losing to BB&N (9-18) and a heartbreaking loss to SJP (historic fencing rival) 13-14. The Women’s team was 0-3 after losing to BUA (12-15), BB&N(8-19) and Dana Hall (8-19)

The first match of the quad meet was against International School of Boston (a new team, second season in the league) who showed up with an incomplete team. The Men’s team won 16-11 and the Women’s Team won 18-9.

The second match was against Beaver Country Day School, the only other complete team at the meet. After an exciting opening 5-4 win by Captain Jacob Hession-Kunz  ’14 in sabre the Men’s Team went on to win 17-10 and the Women Team won 16-11 with Lizzie Chan ’14 getting the 14th win to win the meet.

The third match was against Commonwealth School. Although they didn’t bring a complete team some of the fencers they brought were strong.  The Men’s Team won a close 15-12 but the Women’s Team lost 10-17.

The team records are currently Men’s Team – 4-2, Women’s Team 2-4

After the quad meet the team spent a couple of hours setting up 18 fencing strips in 3 rooms (Upper Gym, Lower Gym and the Cafeteria) for the Invitational.

The Concord Carlisle Invitational is an individual event open to the schools the team sees during the season. It is a great for the new fencers to get some much needed competition time and for the experienced fencers to see how they match up against the other fencers in the league.  This year it had 137 fencers from 14 schools from MA, CT and Huntington, NY on Long Island (who fenced a Tri meet before driving up to Concord). The tournament has 5 rounds – the first two are for seeding (no one eliminated after the first round). The third round cut the team to 15 or 18 fencers depending on the total entries in that event. The fourth round (semi finals) cuts to 12 and the fifth round finals are have 6 fencers.

This year the team had 5 finalists - Silver Medalists Captain Jacob Hession-Kunz ’14 Men’s Sabre and Trey Powers ’15 in Men’s Foil, 4th place Lucy Hill ’16 in Women’s Sabre and Max Krims ’15 in Men’s Foil and  5th place Jackie Luckner ’14 in Women’s Epee. The team also had a number of fencers just miss the finals, one by only a point.

The team is off this weekend and the next meet will on January 26th at St John’s Prep in Danvers (the Women’s team will fence Dana Hall also at SJP) This meet is a scrimmage were they fence will compete squad by squad using the 45 touch relay team format (used for national and international competitions). Then the team will be heading to Huntington NY for an all-day tournament using this format.

Although the team is young this year they are coming together quickly and should be ready for State Championships at BB&N February 9th.
