JV fencers compete during exam week.

Thursday night was a JV meet for the Men’s Team with St John’s Prep (Dana Hall had a school conflict and was unable to attend). Due to the exam week a number of the CC JV fencers were not able to attend and the empty slots were filled by varsity fencers so the score is not really an accurate reflection of the outcome of the meet.

The CC of the two CC JV sabre fencers present, James Putnam ’17 was 2-2 and Owen Krueger ’16 was 2-2. The ninth sabre bout was fencer by Varsity fencer Henry Manlick ’14 who won his bout, leaving the sabre squad with a 5-4 win.

The Men’s Foil squad did not have any JV fencers present and varsity fencers finished with an expected 9-0 win.

The Men’s Epee squad had 5 JV fencers present (all of whom started this season). Jerome Wilson ’16 was 2-0, Addison Pitha ’16 was 2-0, Harry Humpreys ’17 was 2-0, Jack McCarthy ’16 was 1-1 and Will Charterner ‘17 was 1-0 giving the Epee squad an 8-1 win.

The final score from the meet was a 22-5 CC but when the Varsity fencer’s scores are taken out, the score swings to a 15-12 win for SJP. Either way the fencers from both teams got more experience, which is the idea behind having this rare JV meet for the fencing team and we will look forward to final varsity match against SJP and Dana Hall in a week.

Another high point of the meet was a great example of how fencing is a lifetime sport. There was a reunion of sorts.  Jim Carter and Meredith Steyer – SJP coaches, David Blake – CC coach, Carly Dwyer Naik – CC Theater Arts Teacher and Nick Sabino – Referee all fenced at Tanner City Fencers Club in the late 90’s, before most of the current fencers at the meet were born! On top of that Coaches Jim Carter and David Blake first met fencing in the same lower gym when Coach Carter was fencing at UMass Amherst and Coach Blake was fencing at CC BEFORE the other fencers in the reunion were born! This reunion may happen again in a week with the addition of Jane Hall Carter - Dana Hall Coach and Ariana Klinkov - CC Coach.

This weekend is yet another busy weekend for the CC team.  Saturday is an early start to the day with a bus trip to Hopkins School in New Haven CT. Fencing starts at 10 am and the team will fence Hopkins School, Mamaroneck HS, NY and for the first time in many years, Greenwich HS (usually the third school is Riverdale Country School in the Bronx but they were not available). The team will race back to Concord to set up the lower gym and the cafeteria for a five school meet with Beaver Country Day School, Buckingham Browne and Nichols, Bishop Feehan, and International School of Boston. The CC team will fencing Beaver, BF and BB&N in the first three rounds, take a round off and then close with ISB so the best time to come see the team fence is in the morning. Fencing starts at 9 am.
