While being famous for the sake of being famous seems like a new concept, people have always been willing to make a spectacle of themselves — or risk bodily harm — for their moment in the sun. On Oct. 24, 1901, 63-year-old Annie Edson Taylor, strapped for money and looking for fame, became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Taylor survived, but not make a fortune or become famous from her feat.
