Clean Room Opens at Emerson Umbrella

Again, Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts gets ready for some innovative and spellbinding theater with Leslie Pasternack’s Clean Room. A love story told in body, voice and mask, Pasternack is the recipient of two Seacoast Spotlight awards: Best Original Script and Best Actress.

Clean Room focuses on two lives – that of Brighina, a social castoff, and Stupino, a gentle janitor who resides in a mental hospital – and in their explorations of human frailty as well as the discovery of the little details that unite them.

Pasternack’s writing has been hailed as humane and funny and her acting as “precisely crafted” and “spot-on honest.” The play is intellectually stimulating, to say the least, but don’t expect an easy ride. Clean Room has been described as gripping theater and insomuch weaves a rich braid of sadness and hope throughout its dense dialogue.

Tickets for each performance are $15. Clean Room opens Thursday, November 14, and runs Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16: Downstage at Emerson Umbrella. In addition to the 3-performances scheduled, Leslie will conduct a 3-hour teen actor’s technique workshop in traditional clowning to be held at noon on Saturday, November 16. The cost is $45.
