~ WHAT IS DIWALI FESTIVAL?  ~

Find out what's happening in Concordwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Diwali is a festival celebrated in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. While the festival is sacred to Hindus, Jainists, and Sikhs, it is also an important and welcoming cultural event celebrated by many people of other faiths!

In Hindi, Diwali means “festival of lights,” and people light rows of lights to commemorate heroic figures in Indian mythology who triumphed over the forces of evil. Diwali is also an auspicious time for new endeavors, and many people clean their homes and open all their windows and doors to welcome luck and good fortune during Diwali.

The exchange of gifts and the singing of special holiday songs are also traditional during this holiday. Many who celebrate Diwali are very happy to share their religious and cultural traditions with interested and respectful visitors.
