Film and Director Talk: "Wonder: The Lives of Anna and Harlan Hubbard"

"Wonder" is a documentary by Morgan Atkinson about a couple who lived Thoreau-inspired lives in Kentucky.

They began their life together in the mid-1940’s by building a houseboat, then floating from Cincinnati to New Orleans. They settled on the banks of the Ohio River near Milton, KY, in a house they built by hand, sustained by food they raised or caught, aided by no electricity or modern conveniences. “Wonder” considers their life of freedom and what it says to Americans today.

Atkinson enlisted the aid of Kentucky icons Wendell Berry and Will Oldham in telling the Hubbards' story. Berry, the nationally renowned writer and naturalist, wrote a book about Harlan Hubbard, which provides much of the narrative for the film.
