Henry & Emily: The Muses in Massachusetts

"What if Emily Dickinson and Henry Thoreau,

whose paths never actually crossed, had met one afternoon in

1860 for tea in Amherst? And what if that meeting - ripe with humor and

passion - had altered their lives?"

Henry & Emily: The Muses in Massachusetts will be performed as part of The Thoreau Society's 72nd Annual Gathering.

This original play is an imagined encounter between Henry David Thoreau and Emily Dickinson. The drama centers on the artists' conflicting needs for communion and solitude. Half of the two-person play is in the language of these iconic New England writers. Although the general tone is serious, the play has its comic moments, as the famous characters struggle to find something to chat about over tea. They persevere, and discover their own kind of union.

The play is free and open to the public. For information: info@thoreausociety.org or 978-369-5310.

The Thoreau Society’s Annual Gathering, July 10-14, is a multidisciplinary festival celebrating the influence of Thoreau on creativity in scholarship and the arts. For details and registration, visit www.thoreausociety.org. Registration materials will also be available at First Parish before the play.
