Hutchinson grave marker dedication
Peter Hutchinson was the last member of the Robbins family to live in the house built by Peter Robbins - the house now relocated to the site by the North bridge parking lot. He was probably the first man of color to register and vote in Concord and, for the last hundred and fifty years, his grave has been in Sleepy Hollow, unmarked. That is about to change, thanks to collaboration between the Friends of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the Drinking Gourd Project. A stone marker has been erected on the grave site, and will be dedicated in a ceremony on Saturday, November 9 at 2 pm. Dr, Robert Gross will speak at the occasion, and there will be music and singing to mark the event.
All are welcome to come and honor this man who gives his name to Peter Spring Rd, Peter's field, was mentioned in the poem by Emerson, and mentioned by Thoreau as the 'dexterous pig-butcher'. It seems from contemporary accounts that he was a well-respected member of the Concord community. It is appropriate now to give him the dignity of a grave stone, and recognition as an integral part of Concord's history.
