Lexington Community Education presents: The Theater of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s: A One-Person Performance of American Theatrical History with Actor Stephen Collins

The 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s  represent a great period of American Theatrical History. This evening, through biographical and historical narrative and dramatic performance we will witness the influence of, and reaction to, the Great Depression as made powerfully evident in the work of Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award winner William Saroyan. From there we will visit the ‘40s and see the talent of playwrights Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Eugene O'Neil emerge from dysfunctional families and the American dream gone awry. We will then time travel to 1954 and N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, and meet Nash’s character Starbuck as he charms the audience with his brand of con and hucksterism. Collins will perform monologues from these and other playwrights, and may even sing a Cole Porter and George Gershwin tune to round off the evening.

Stephen Collins grew up in Cambridge, and received a BA in Literature from UMass Boston. After twenty-plus years in a sales career, he is back doing what he truly loves - performing and teaching. Recently he has been teaching seminars on Whitman, Hardy, Shakespeare, Frost and Contemporary Poetry at various locations throughout the country.

The cost of this evening's event is $10.00

Pre-registration, using a MasterCard or VISA, is strongly recommended by contacting Lexington Community Education at 781 862 8043.
