Monadnock Music Presents the Sounds of Lou Harrison

#Sounds of Lou Harrison

On July 27, Artistic Director Gil Rose conducts
“Suite for Violin and American Gamelan” and “La Koro Sutro” by the late American
composer Lou Harrison
, noted for incorporating elements of the music from
non-Western cultures into his work. The program features the American Gamelan,
Harrison’s adaptation of the Javanese instruments; six percussionists;
violinist Gabriela Diaz; and the introduction of the new 35-voice Monadnock
Festival Chorus, with Krystal Morin, chorus master.

Harrison’s
daring musical output includes works strongly influenced by the music of
non-Western cultures. This concert features music for Harrison’s signature
“American gamelan,” his own set of Javanese-style instruments unique in the
musical world. La Koro Sutro “The Heart Sutra” is based on 1st
century Buddhist sutras referring to the “heart of divine wisdom.”
