Talking with Owls

Get ready to practice your owl calls!

All ages are invited to join us for this interesting program on interacting with natural environments through acoustics. In 2003, the Maine Audubon Society, and later Unity College, began a ten-year survey of owls using the “playback” method. This survey, conducted by volunteers throughout the state of Maine, required on-site visits typically late at night and likely in the cold to “play” owl vocalizations using stereo equipment such as MP3, CD and even tape or car stereo players. Since then, efforts have been made to utilize cell phone technology to acoustically interact with owls (or other species) from remote (and warmer!) locations. Presented by Carlisle resident Dale Joachim. Mr. Joachim has held faculty and research positions at Lockheed Martin, Tulane University, MIT and Lincoln Laboratory. While at MIT/Media Lab, he explored new ways to interact with natural environments through acoustics.
