About Town: Legally Blonde Opens; Thoreau Society Hosts Annual Gathering

Well, we’re a full week into the summer, and so far we’ve had searing heat and torrential rain. This could bode for some pretty interesting weather over the next two months! No matter, it’s just nice to have the long days and warm nights – I’m loving being out of doors every single day.

Theatre Tonight

If you don’t already have your tickets, now is the time to buy them: is showing “Legally Blonde” tonight, tomorrow night and Saturday night at 7:30, over at the theatre at the 1400 Lowell Road. It’s the story of society gal Elle Woods who sets out to win back her boyfriend by following him to Harvard Law School. It’s fun and funny and a great way to introduce your kids to theatre, especially because the performers are kids themselves, albeit extremely talented ones. The actors include CYT alums home from college, as well as high school students. Tickets are a very reasonable $15 each, and you can buy them at the door with cash or a check. Time for a Gathering

It probably won’t surprise you to know there’s a whole society devoted to Henry David Thoreau, right here in Concord. In fact, they are the “oldest and largest organization devoted to an American author,” according to the Thoreau Society's website. And they are hosting their annual gathering from July 12 to 15, featuring Edward Osborne Wilson, University Professor Emeritus and Honorary Curator in Entomology Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology. Believe me when I tell you, they have a full agenda spread out over the four days, including walks in the woods, extensive workshops on Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, a piano concert, a tour of the Caesar Robbins house – really, way too much to list here. For a full description of the gathering, and information on how to register, check out their website here. Even if you only do one or two of their offerings, it will give you a greater understanding and appreciation of one of Concord’s former prominent citizens.

Speaking of Thoreau …

Summer is a great time to take a walk up in Walden Woods, the part above the Town Forest closer to Route 2. If you’ve never wandered around up there, it’s totally worth it: there are stone markers set in the ground with quotes by Thoreau on them, and a lovely circle of stones with quotes about nature and humanity from all kinds of famous people. It’s always tranquil there, a really great destination walk. Next time you’re looking to get out into nature, head over there and check it out.
