Halloween Means Haunted Concord

From the Colonial Inn to the Old Manse to the skull tombstone at Old Hill Cemetery, ghost stories abound in Concord.

Ghost stories are especially popular this time of year, and Concord has them in spades.

Ahead of the Halloween holiday, Boston.com posted a gallery of haunted hotels around New England, and Concord's Colonial Inn made the list on the strength of its staff's stories, investigations and the legend of  Room 24.

The Colonial Inn embraces the mystery, even including a "Haunted Inn" section on its website, which includes links to media coverage and investigations into the room, like the one from SyFy's Ghost Hunters that you can see above.

But the Colonial Inn isn't the only site with ghost stories in this town of Revolutionary and literary lore.

The Old Manse, for example, taps into its paranormal potential with events like the Haunted Attic Tours of which there will be two this Thursday, Oct. 24. The attic tours at the Old Manse recall ghastly tales from the house's rich history, including Nathaniel Hawthorne's belief that he heard a ghost maid at work in the kitchen.

Another popular local ghost story features the "Skull Tombstone" at Old Hill Cemetery. According to the lore, there's an eerie aura throughout the 1700s burying ground, but the spookiest site is an old tombstone with strange skull image and equally unsettling “bowing to the king of terror” inscription. Some report seeing "real" eyes inside the skull's sockets, which appear to follow visitors as they move around.

We're sure these aren't the only Haunted Concord stories. If you've got one to share, add it to the comments section below!
