Deciding to hire in-home health care? What you need to know before you start.

Most elderly people will tell you that they prefer to stay in their home. The latest term for this is Aging in Place. Most Americans would like to have this option. If you are deciding whether or not to hire help for aging parents, friends, or relatives, here are a few things you should know.

1. Hiring privately, although potentially cheaper, has many pitfalls. You are responsible for your caregiver's income tax reporting.

2. Most agencies will offer a minimum of 3 hours of care daily - up to 24 hours if necessary.

3. Hire an agency with 24 x 7 on call services. You never know when you might need extra help.

4. Ask about skilled nursing services. Many agencies do not have nurse's available to visit client homes. Use an agency that has an RN available 24 x 7 for any medical issues that arise.

5. Most agency services include transportation, medication management, personal care, light housekeeping, and meal preparation.

6. The average cost for a three hour visit from a Certified Nursing Assistant is $78.

7. Long Term Care Insurance covers most in-home care services.

8. Live-in care costs about $250 per day.

9. Always ask agencies for references from former and current clients.

Hiring in-home care is an important step to keeping seniors safe and healthy in their homes. There are many agencies and private workers out there to supply the care needed. Do your homework to find the one that works best for you.
