Simple Steps for Making Homes Safer for Seniors

Studies show that the majority of seniors prefer to remain in their homes as they age. AARP Aging in Place Study There are some simple steps to take to help seniors remain safe in their homes as they get older. Many of these steps can be taken without incurring significant expenses.

General Safety

  • Place a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and make it easily visible and accessible
  • Keep the home well lit - inside and out (walkways, porches, hallways)
  • Place protective screens on fireplaces
  • Cover all exposed hot water pipes

Removing household hazards

  • Remove raised doorway thresholds
  • Remove throw rugs and repair uneven flooring
  • Repair loose carpeting
  • Move furniture and electrical cords away from walking pathways
  • Put rubber tips on walkers or canes
  • Put nightlights in all hallways and bathrooms
  • Make sure all handrails are sturdy

Bathroom safety

  • Install grab handles
  • Place non-skid mats inside and outside of tub or shower as well as near the toilet and sink areas
  • Use shower chairs and bath benches
  • Use a long-handles brusk to help with bathing
  • Place all soap and shampoo on a low shelf for easy access

Daily living

  • Store household items on low shelves
  • Buy a reaching device from a medical supply store
  • For the visually impaired, buy a phone and clock with large numbers
  • If using a step stool, make sure it has handles
  • Do not carry too many items at once
  • Use shopping bags with handles
  • Have an area close to the main entrance to put down items while entering and exiting the home

Clothing

  • Wear low-heeled, comfortable shoes
  • Check the heels and soles of shoes for excess wear
  • Wear shoes with non-skid soles
  • Do not wear socks without shoes on hardwood or tiled flooring
