Body Found at Walden Pond

Reportedly matches description of missing Lincoln man.

A body matching descriptions of the 63-year-old Lincoln man reported missing earlier this week was found Tuesday morning at Walden Pond

According to a press release from the Massachusetts State Police, the joint search operation resulted in the recovery of a body in approximately 20 feet of water about 75 years from shore at 11:48 a.m. on Oct. 1.

"While official confirmation has not yet been made, the deceased's appearance is consistent with that of the 63-year-old man who was last seen swimming in the pond early Sunday evening," the press release said.
The recovery was made jointly by the Massachusetts State Police, Concord Fire Department, Lincoln Fire Department, Bedford Fire Department, Concord Police, Lincoln Police, and Environmental Police this morning, the third day of the search."

The name of the victim is not being released, and no further information is being released at this time.

Background

Boats, divers and other searchers had searched Walden Pond Sunday night and much of the day Monday, as emergency responders searched land and water for the Lincoln man, who was last seen when he attempted to swim across the water around 5:30 p.m. Sunday night.

Police officials had said the man set out with two women, but was swimming at his own pace. Police were alerted around 6:40 p.m. on Sunday night after he did not return to the shore.

Situated in a state reservation, Walden Pond is a glacial kettle pond more than 100-feet deep at some points. The pond has also been designated as a National Historical Landmark, a title owed at least in part to the time Henry David Thoreau spend there in the mid-1800s and its prominence in his work.
