Hammer-Wielding Man Arrested for Threatening Restaurant Employees

Incident occurred Saturday, June 29 in Concord.

Getting hammered at the bar took on a different meaning Saturday night at Michael’s Restaurant in Concord, where a man wielding an orange mallet allegedly threatened employees and smashed objects in the bar area.

Around 11:45 p.m. on June 29, a 911 caller reported a young man walking into the Sudbury Road restaurant with a hammer and began threatening workers there. The responding officers arrived to find a man holding a large orange mallet and standing in a fighting posture.

Police had to use OC spray (Oleoresin Capsicum) prior to handcuffing the man, later identified as 23-year-old Courtland Thompson of Sudbury, due to his violent behavior, according to Concord Police Chief Barry Neal.

Even with the spray, Thompson didn’t go down without a fight, according to police.

It took several officers to subdue Thompson, who was described as being “totally out of control,” according to Neal, who said the man kicked one officer and punched another in the face during the struggle.

“It was a dangerous situation for everyone,” Neal said. “They did a great job getting him into custody without him harming himself or anyone else.”

Following the arrest, Thompson was transported to Emerson Hospital for observation.

Courtland I. Thompson, 23, of 34 Alta Road, Sudbury, was arrested and charged with four counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer (two counts), disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
