You Ask, Patch Answers: An ID for the Body Found at Walden Pond?

Divers searched Walden Pond for a missing Lincoln man last week, and found a body that matched his description.

You Ask, Patch Answers is an occasional feature in which ... well, it's pretty much exactly as it sounds. Readers ask a question and we try to find an answer.

Lately, we've been hearing from readers looking for more information about last week's search for a missing swimmer and subsequent discovery of a body at Walden Pond

Some background: The evening of Sunday, Sept. 29, state and local police were called to Walden Pond for a report of a 63-year-old Lincoln man last seen before attempting to swim across the pond. Into the night on Sunday and then again for most of the day on Monday, searchers scoured the kettle pond and the surrounding woods for the man. Late Tuesday morning, a body was found and the search concluded

Throughout the search and discovery, the man was never identified. And the most frequently asked question(s) from you, our readers: Who was the missing man, and why has it taken so long to learn his name?

Well, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, an official identification will not be forthcoming. "Where this was an accidental drowning we will not be releasing victim's name," a spokesperson for the DA's office said in an email.

The DA's office also stopped short of confirming that the body found was indeed the missing Lincoln man, saying, "The decedent is a 63-year-old male from Lincoln."

That adds Lincoln residency to the description offered by the Massachusetts State Police announcing the discovery of the body.

"While official confirmation has not yet been made, the deceased's appearance is consistent with that of the 63-year-old man who was last seen swimming in the pond early Sunday evening," the Oct. 1 press release said.
