Warren Wins Concord, State: U.S. Senate

Democrat Elizabeth Warren has taken back the "Kennedy Seat" from Republican Scott Brown, who has represented Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate since a January 2010 special election held to fill the seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy's death.

Tsongas Takes Concord: U.S. Congressman, 3rd Congressional District

Incumbent Niki Tsongas, a Lowell Democrat, will hold onto her seat after another challenge from Republican Jon Golnik of Carlisle. Tsongas more than doubled up Golnik here in Concord, earning 7,512 votes to his 3,147.

Barrett Carries Concord: State Senate, Third Middlesex District

Lexington Democrat Mike Barrett appears to be running away with the race to replace , who's leaving after eight terms. In Concord, Barrett tallied 6,938 votes versus 3,178 for Chelmsford Republican Sandi Martinez, who's poised to lose a bid for the Third Middlesex seat for the fourth time.  

Atkins Over Benn (R): State Representative, 14th Middlesex District

Incumbent Cory Atkins, a Concord Democrat, look to hang onto her seat by fending off a challenge from Mike Benn, a Republican from Concord. If their hometown is any indication, Atkins is off to a good start, tallying 7,075 votes to Benn's 3,255.

Caught up with Town Clerk Anita Tekle a little before noontime at Hunt Recreation Center on Stow Street, where the vote was up over 700, or about 30 percent of the total registered voters in Precinct 5. 

According to Tekle, across town, 17.4 percent of the town's record 13,000 registered voters had cast their ballot by of 9 a.m., with only a few absentee ballots among those counted in that tally.

The total number of registered was only one of several record highs for this election, according to Tekle, who said the more than 2,000 absentee ballots, 500 post-primary registrations were records as well.

Nearly halfway through the day, Tekle was predicting a total turnout in the high 80 percent. While today's turnout is likely to fall short of the record 91 percent in 1992, there were only 10,000 registered voters back then, so this year's number could be even higher, Tekle said.

Some other notables from the polls earlier today...

-- There was a guy in a wig who said he was from an Australian TV show interviewing sign-holders outside Hunt Gym. He asked a couple of decent political questions, but it's possible he'll be using them for a Daily Show type production. I grabbed his number and hope to follow up, so stay tuned.

-- At polling locations around town, folks from Sage Systems signatures for a pair of petitions looking to stop Concord's bottled water-banning bylaw as part of an effort funded by Bottled Water Matters. At Harvey Wheeler, Jill Appel, campaign manager for Concord On Tap and a petioner who helped push the bylaw through annual Town Meeting earlier this year, was doing her best to silence that noise. More on this later.

-- Also at Harvey Wheeler, Mike Benn, the Concord Republican challenging incumbent state Rep. Cory Atkins, D-Concord, for her seat representing the 14th Middlesex District, was holding signs and supplied at least one supporter with coffee. Benn, who had been in Acton earlier in the day, said turnouts looked high, but he wasn't sure whether that was good news for his campaign. 

"The more people get out, assuming these folks are educated, we can't lose," said Benn. "We'll get the government we deserve."

-- The line stretched all the way outside Harvey Wheeler just before 11 a.m. Inside, Precinct 2 was climbing toward 700 ballots and Precinct 3 was keeping the pace. A high turnout means a busy day for poll workers and wardens. "Yes," said Yvette Boyle, the warden for Precinct 2, "But it's a good thing."
