Concord Town Elections Shaping Up

And with contested races!

The nominees are in, and it looks like Concord’s annual Town Election, scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, will feature contested races for the two seats coming open on the School Committee.

Following the Town Caucus and subsequent deadline for nomination papers, there are four candidates, all of them newcomers, for two three-year terms on the School Committee.

Residents Lisa Bergen, Johanna Boynton, Cyntia Rainey and Kathleen Snook were all nominated at .

Also nominated at the caucus were Eric Van Loon for a one-year term as Town moderator, Carmen Reiss and Alice Kaufman for Board of Selectmen and Dennon Rodrigue for a five-year term on the Concord Housing Authority.

Van Loon, the current moderator, is running for re-election. Reiss, the current selectmen Chairwoman, is running for re-election to a second three-year term. Kaufman is seeking to join the board, while Selectman Stanly Black will leave the board after two three-year terms. Rodrigue is in line to replace Nancy Crowley, who’s completing one five-year term on the Housing Authority and is not seeking re-election.

Two terms has been more or less been the custom for residents elected to the Board of Selectmen and School Committee, while one term has been more the norm for Housing Authority.

Black, Crowley and outgoing School Committee member Fabian Fondriest are all following those traditions. The other vacancy, on the School Committee, comes as Maureen Spada, the current CPS Chair, has decided not to seek a second term on the board.

Among the four candidates for School Committee, two of them Lisa Bergen and Johanna Boynton, previously announced their candidacy on Patch.

The contested races for School Committee come after a year that’s seen some ups and downs around the schools, including the suspension and reinstatement of state funding for a new Concord-Carlisle High School, controversy over plans to outsource school transportation and allegations of mistrust of school administrators.

The lower pair of links for reading the letters from Ms. Bergen and Ms. Boynton are broken. (The upper pair are working)

Thanks, Julie, for pointing that out. It should be fixed now. -pb
