Sunday Town Meeting Coming to Concord

Local government your idea of Sunday Funday?

Town Meeting is the epitome of old New England, but Concord will be putting a new twist on its municipal government next spring.

As The Globe noted, the Board of Selectmen last week agreed to move forward a plan to try out holding opening annual Town Meeting on a Sunday afternoon in May 2014.

Town Meeting, according to the plan approved, will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. Subsequent meetings will be held at the typical 7 p.m. start time beginning Monday, May 5.

The trial is a nod to modern life’s impact on municipal government.

Officials have said they hope opening Town Meeting on a Sunday will make it easier for older residents and young families to attend. In the past, some have complained consecutive weekday sessions, which can run from around 7 p.m. to midnight, made it difficult to participate fully for those who needed to reschedule work commitments, or find transportation or childcare.

But what do you think? Will starting annual Town Meeting on a Sunday afternoon make it easier for more Concordians to participate?
