About Town: A Successful Book Sale, an Equipment Drive, and Thanking Teachers

Good morning and welcome to Thursday! Hasn’t it been nice to have some sunny weather, after the deluge of rain at the beginning of the month? Even though the gardens and lawns need it, the wet weather gets a little tiresome. So it was especially nice that last weekend turned out sunny and beautiful, the perfect weather for the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

The sale has become an annual event, with throngs of people coming from all over to peruse the very excellent selection of used books available. Really, the sale started at 10 a.m., but by 9:30 a.m., people were lining up all around the perimeter of the library lawn. The great thing about the sale is, not only is there something for everyone, but it’s all so reasonably priced. For just a few dollars, you can go away with a bag full of new (to you) books to read at your leisure. And when you’re done, you can just donate them again!

This year’s sale earned over $18,000, all of which will go to funding the many and varied library programs, such as museum passes, movie nights, teen events, and author readings. Cool stuff that makes our library so much more than just the ever-useful purveyor of books. If you didn’t get to the book sale this year, mark your calendar and look for it next June.

The Sporting Life

If you have kids, and if they play sports, chances are you’ve collected a fair amount of sports equipment over the years. And unless your kids all play the same sports – and how often does that happen, really? – or you have copious relatives nearby to pass things down to, chances are you have random sporting stuff cluttering up your basement or garage. What to do, what to do? Lucky for you, some intrepid CCHS students are ready and able to take it off your hands, for a good cause. They’ll be joining the Concord-San Marcos Sister Cities Committee and heading to Nicaragua this summer to participate in a cultural exchange, and they’re collecting gently used soccer gear (shin guards, deflated balls, shorts, soccer shirts, socks, and cleats) and baseball equipment (pants, belts, socks, cleats, uniforms, gloves, bats) to donate to the youth of San Marcos.

Just bring your donations this Saturday, June 16, over to any time from noon to 3 pm. Oh, and they can also use duffle bags and suitcases, if you’ve got them – because they need SOME way to get all that great equipment to the kids in San Marcos.

An Apple for the Teacher

Ok, it’s the end of the year, and you want to find a way to thank your kid’s teacher, but really, how many mugs do they really need? Here’s a thought: make a donation in their name to the Concord Education Fund (CEF). Funds raised by the CEF go to enrichment programs in the schools, including teacher grants and educational initiatives. And what teacher doesn’t want that?? Plus the CEF will send an acknowledgement to the teacher you name, to let them know you’ve honored them in this way. Pretty sweet! It’s as simple as getting your credit card and going here. Think about it: it could make the end of the school year just a little easier.
