CCHS Grad Biking Across the US for Bikes Not Bombs

Steve Murphy is cycling across the Northern Tier to raise funds for the Boston-based charity.

The following was provided by Kimberly Turner

Steve Murphy, a South Boston resident and Concord-Carlisle High School alum, is riding his bicycle across the Northern Tier of the US to raise money for Boston-based charity Bikes Not Bombs

Steve kicked off his ride on Tuesday, July 9, from Seattle and will ride 4,000-plus miles in approximately 85 days to get back to Boston, where he will end his adventure.

He has been on the road now for just over two weeks, crossed several mountain passes as he made his way through the Cascade Mountains -- some reaching over 5000 feet.  He has made his way through Idaho and into Montana.  He's ridden the 'Road to the Sun' through Glacier National Park (AKA: Logan's Pass), over the Continental Divide, 6,600 feet! With the Rockies behind him, he has begun his ride through the plains of Eastern Montana and into North Dakota!

If you would like to follow his ride, be sure to check out his blog

Steve is using his cross country trek as a fund raising opportunity for Bikes Not Bombs, a local non-profit in Boston which, through their Youth Programs, uses the bicycle as a tool to foster young people’s leadership, development, and sense of individual and collective power to transform their own lives, strengthen communities and build a just and sustainable planet.

BNB also ships bikes overseas to through their International Programs  to help close the huge transportation gap between walking and using motorized vehicles. Many people walk long distances because they cannot afford motorized transportation, thus reducing their access to critical resources such as education, healthcare, markets, jobs, clean water, etc.

What an adventure. What an accomplishment. What a great Cause.
