Concord Coping with Heat Wave

Cooling station established, CMLP projects possible peak demand hour as temperatures top 90 degrees.

Warm out today. Warm yesterday. And it will be tomorrow, too, according to forecasts.

As WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner noted yesterday on the station's weather blog, Wednesday was the fourth straight with a high in the 90s, and that the heat wave could continue on until Saturday, which would make it seven-straight days with temps in the 90s and the longest heat wave since 2012.

Hot days and cool nights can be nice during the summertime, but weather this warm can complicate things.

On the one hand, there are the health concerns. And on another, there are the power concerns. Concord addressed both on Wednesday, July 17.

Check out the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency’s website for a few tips on dealing with extreme heat.

Concord’s office of Emergency Management, (CEMA) on Wednesday announced the opening of a cooling center at the Harvey Wheeler building in West Concord. The center’s hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and Friday, July 19. CEMA also suggested the Concord Free Public Library’s main and Fowler branches as options for folks looking to cool down a little.

Additionally, the Concord Municipal Light Plant made its third call of a possible peak demand hour, saying that based on weather and ISO New England’s forecasts, CMLP expects a peak demand sometime between 1 and 5 p.m. yesterday or today, July 18.

As peak demand and prices are related, CMLP has advised ratepayers to reduce or reschedule electricity use during the next few days as a way to reduce electricity costs for customers.
