About Town: Garden Club Plant Sale, Minute Man MARCH, and more Little Women

Ok, we’ve had a little rain, the lilacs are in full bloom, spring has really started to – well, spring. Even so, my garden is looking a little bare: as the greens start to poke up, I can get a good look at where I could use a plant or two. Lucky for me – and for you, too – the Garden Club of Concord is having their plant sale next Saturday, May 12. It takes place from 8:30 am until noon on the lawn of Middlesex Bank in Concord Center, rain or shine.

This is no ordinary plant sale: these are local plants that have been dug from the gardens of some very experienced and successful gardeners. Meaning I may have a higher chance of success than with the plants I buy at Home Depot, I’m thinking. These are plants with a proven track record. Additionally, they will have some interesting herbs and annual flowers, as well as some lovely baked goods, if you happen to be hungry while shopping (which I usually am).

The plant sale is a fundraiser for the Garden Club, so they can continue their horticultural activities around town. These include local gardening and conservation efforts such as Gaining Ground – to the tune of several thousand dollars each year – the maintenance of the gardens at the Town House and in West Concord, and the creation and delivery of cheery arrangements of spring flowers to many shut-in Concordians during the month of March.

Honestly, I had no idea that the Garden Club took care of so much, and I applaud their efforts. And now I think I’ll support them by personally going down and buying a plant for that bare space in my garden. I hope they have something for shade.

Don’t forget to MARCH

There are only two days to go until the Minute Man MARCH, the annual fundraising walk here in Concord to benefit children and adults with developmental disabilities. It takes place this Saturday, May 5, with registration at 9 a.m., the walk starting at 10 a.m., and a family celebration afterwards, all over at 130C Baker Ave. There are a number of ways to participate – click here for full details. But the important thing to know is that the money raised supports critical programs like Early Intervention, Family Services, and Residential Services. This year’s MARCH is dedicated to the much-loved late executive director Marty Martini. If you can’t march, you can still donate by going here.

More Little Women opportunities

Listen, I went to see the production of Little Women at the Concord Players last Friday, and it blew me away. It doesn’t matter if you’ve read the book, you’re at least familiar with the story, and David Fielding Smith’s script does the novel justice. But it’s the actors and director that bring it to full-blooming life right before your eyes. Audiences gave it a standing ovation all four performances. That’s right, these people perform four times in three days, a fact that exhausts me just thinking about it.

So if you don’t have your tickets yet, here are two incentives: first, for the two remaining Saturday matinees, students can get their tickets at two for the price of one. That’s a great deal! They can get them either by calling 978-369-2990, or at the door. And second, this Sunday’s matinee will have a talkback immediately after, with the director, the playwright, and some of the cast members. Meaning you can ask all your burning questions about what goes into the creation of a play, the direction, and the characters. When do you ever get that opportunity??
