Monday Essentials: Concord Orchestra Premieres 'The Transcendentalists'
Here's a quick look at what you need to know for the week ahead in Concord.

1. The Fenn School Speaker Series: Michael Thompson, "Best Friends Worst Enemies": At 7 p.m. this Wednesday, Oct. 16, Dr. Michael Thompson give a free talk at the Fenn School that will distinguish between the normal social pain of childhood from which all children learn and actual bullying, which is traumatizing. 2. Public Meetings Preview: According to the town website, here's the week's lineup of public meetings:
- Tuesday, Oct. 15: the Historic Issues Group at 8 a.m., the CCHS Building Committee Finance Subcommittee at 4 p.m., the Minuteman School Council at 4:30 p.m., the Public Ceremonies & Celebrations Committee at 6 p.m., the Board of Health at 7 p.m., the Hanscom Field AdvisoryCommission at 7 p.m. and the Concord Cultural Council at 7:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct. 16: the CCHS Building Committee Site Based Subcommittee at 2:30 p.m., the Concord & Concord Carlisle Regional School Committees--Joint Meeting at 5:30 p.m, the CCHS Building Committee at 6 p.m., the Natural Resources Commission at 7 p.m. and the White Pond Advisory Committee at 7:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Oct. 17: a Historic Districts Commission site visit at 8 a.m., the Historic Districts Commission at 7 p.m., the Concord Middle School - Advisory Council at 7 p.m. and the Finance Committee/Guidelines Subcommittee at 7:30 p.m.
4. Concord Orchestra: The Transcendentalists: At 8 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 18, the Concord Orchestra opens its 60th anniversary season with the world premiere of a newly commissioned work, Fantasy Concerto: Concord Conversations, a triple concerto composed by Eric Sawyer in which the instruments in the concerto represent the voices of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott, all central figures in Concord's transcendentalist movement. Cradles to Crayons Collects at Concord Swap: At 9 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 19 at Concord Public Works, Concord Swap is partnering with Cradles to Crayons to collect new and like-new essential children's items that will help children living in homeless or low-income situations have the essentials they need to feel safe, warm, ready to learn, and valued.
