Weekend Agenda: Concerts, Opera and Winter Solstice Celebrations

A handful of events to consider before filling in your weekend planner.

The weekend has arrived, but you’ve got no idea what you’re going to do? Patch is coming to the rescue with your best bets for the done-work-outta-here time.

Check out our picks for activities you won’t want to miss this weekend: 

1. Winter Solstice Celebration at the Playscape at Ripley
Where/When: 120 Meriam Road, Concord; 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 21 
Why Go: 
Concord Children’s Center, fiscal sponsor of the Playscape at Ripley, is offering a participatory, family-oriented event to mark the changing seasons. 
Pricing: Free. But space may be limited, so email CCC Executive Director Pat Nelson at ccc-pn@verizon.net or phone on 978-369-3747 to reserve a spot. 

2. Concord Women's Chorus Holiday Concert - "Winter's Promise"
Where/When: Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm St. Concord; 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21 
Why Go: 
Because "this joyous concert of seasonal works will feature a rare 18th century chamber work by composer Baldassare Galuppi" and concludes with an audience carol sing-a-long. 
Pricing: $25 for adults, $20 for students and seniors, and $5 for children 12 and under.

3. Winter Solstice with Emerson Umbrella
Where/When: Old Manse, 269 Monument St, Concord; 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6
Why Go:
To join with the folks from Musketaquid in celebrating the Winter Solstice with a sing-along with Voices for the Earth, luminaria and light refreshments. 
Pricing: Free 

4. Amahl and the Night Visitors
Where/When: The Performing Arts Center at 51 Walden; 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 22 
Why Go: 
To see Menotti's "heartwarming" opera, conducted by Alan Yost and featuring soloists Julia Shneyderman, Robin Farnsley, Ray Bauwens, Brad Amidon, Thomas Dawkins and Michael Prichard. 
Pricing: $20 adults/$10 students
